পাললিক শিলা স্তরে স্তরে সঞ্চিত হওয়ার সময় জলজ উদ্ভিদ ও প্রাণীর মৃতদেহ বা দেহের কোনো অংশ চাপা পড়ে গিয়ে কালক্রমে তা পাথরে পরিণত হয় এবং সেই পাথরের মধ্যে ঐ জীবের ছাপ থেকে যায়। এভাবে জীবের দেহাবশেষ অবিকৃত অবস্থায় পাথরে পরিণত হলে তাকে জীবাশ্ম বলা হয়।
