একটি অপরটির চেয়ে দোষ বা গুণের যে পরিমান বুঝায় সে পরিমানকে Degrees of Comparison বলে।
Degree ৩টি ভাগে বিভক্ত। যথা-
- Positive Degree
- Comparative Degree
- Superlative Degree
POSITIVE DEGREE:
কোন sentence এ Noun বা pronoun এর দোষ, গুন, অবস্থা ইত্যাদি বুঝাতে বা Noun ও pronoun সম্পর্কে বর্ণনা দিতে adjective এর যে রূপ ব্যবহার হয় তাকে Positive Degree বলে।
বাক্যের গঠন: -Sub(যার সম্পর্কে বর্ণনা দেওয়া হয়) +verb+adjective +extension. অথবা Sub(যার সম্পর্কে বর্ণনা দেওয়া হয়) +verb+as+adjective+as+extension.
উদাহরন:-
1. Robiul is a good man (Rabiul হয় একটি ভালো মানুষ )।
এখানে Good শব্দটি Robiul সম্পর্কে বর্ণনা দিয়েছে।
বাংলা বাক্যে মত এরপর adjective থাকলে positive degree হয়।
যেমন:-
1. As much as I know, he is a good man. আমি যতটুকু জানি, সে একজন ভালো মানুষ।
2. I do not know as much as you know. আমি জানিনা যতটা/যে পরিমাণ তুমি জানো।
As valuable as time=সময়ের মতো মূল্যবান
As big as India=ভারতের মত বড়
As honest as Rohim=রহিমের মত সৎ
As cunning as fox= শিয়ালের মতো চালাক
COMPARATIVE DEGREE:
সাধারণত দুটি Noun বা pronoun এর দোষ, গুন, অবস্থা ইত্যাদির তুলনা করতে adjective এর যে রূপ ব্যবহার হয় তাকে Comparative Degree বলে। অর্থাৎ Comparative Degree এর মাধ্যমে দুইজন মানুষ বা দুটি বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করা হয়।
উদাহর:- 1. I love you more than I can say /express. আমি বলতে/ প্রকাশ করতে পারার চেয়েও তোমাকে বেশি ভালোবাসি।
2. I know about this metter less than you (do)আমি এই বিষয়ে তোমার চেয়ে কম জানি।
গঠন:- যাকে তুলনা করা হয় সে বসবে+verb+adjective এর comparative form+than+ any other +যার সাথে তুলনা করা হয় সে বসবে/ than all other যার সাথে তুলনা করা হয় সে বসবে in plural form ।
গঠন:- যাকে তুলনা করা হয় সে বসবে+verb+adjective এর comparative form+than+ most other +যাদের সাথে তুলনা করা হয় তারা বসবে/ than many other যাদের সাথে তুলনা করা হয় তারা বসবে ।
Note:- আমরা কম্পারেটিভ ডিগ্রী তে দুইটা দল হিসেবে বিবেচনা করি। যাকে তুলনা করা হয় সে হলো একটি দল এবং যার বা যাদের সাথে তুলনা করা হয় সেটা আলাদা একটা দল। তাই comparative degree তে other শব্দটা ব্যবহার করা হয় কারন যাকে তুলনা করা হচ্ছে তাকে যার বা যাদের সাথে তুলনা করা হচ্ছে তার বা তাদের থেকে আলাদা করার জন্য। যদি আলাদা না করা হয় তাহলে যাদের সাথেে তুলনা করা হচ্ছে তাদের মধ্যে প্রথম সাবজেক্টটি থেকে যাবেে।
যেমন:- 1. Sanjana is wiser than payel (Sanjana হয় পায়েলের থেকে বিজ্ঞ বা Sanjana পায়েলের থেকে বিজ্ঞ )
2. Sultan is better than Mamud.(Sultan মামুদের থেকে ভাল) ।
3. Rahim’s house is bigger than mine. রহিমের বাড়ি আমার বাড়ির চেয়ে বৃহত্তর ।
SUPERLATIVE DEGREE:
সাধারণত অনেকের মধ্যে তুলনা করতে adjective এর যে রূপ ব্যবহার হয় তাকে Superlative Degree বলে। অর্থাৎ একজন মানুষ (বস্তকে) কে অনেকের সাথে তুলনা করা হয় ।
উদাহরণ. 1. Whom you hate most তুমি কাকে সবচেয়ে বেশি ঘৃণা করো?
2. He is such a man whom I like the least. সে এমন একজন ব্যক্তি যাকে আমি সবচেয়ে কম পছন্দ করি।
বাক্যের গঠন: – যাকে তুলনা করা হয় সে বসবে + verb + the+ adjective এর superlative form +noun ( in Singular form) + in (যদি Place এর সেন্স আসে)+যাদের সাথে তুলনা করা হচ্ছে তারা বসবে ।
বাক্যের গঠন: – যাকে তুলনা করা হয় সে বসবে + verb + the+adjective এর superlative form + of all /( of all+ Subject in plural form). যদি Place এর সেন্স না আসে।
Note:- যদি progressive adjective আসে তাহলে the ব্যবহার করতে হয় না।
Ex:- He is my best friend.
যেমন – 1. Sachin is the best player in the team.(সচিন দলের মধ্যে সবথেকে ভালো খেলোয়াড়)।
1a. This book is the most useful of all.
1b. Aziz is the most experienced of all the teachers of the school. আজিজ স্কুলের সমস্ত শিক্ষকদের মধ্যে সবচাইতে অভিজ্ঞ।/আজিজ স্কুলের শিক্ষকদের মধ্যে অভিজ্ঞতম।
1c. Raju is the most industrious of all the boys of the class. রাজু ক্লাসের সব ছেলের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে বেশি পরিশ্রমী।
2. Raju is the best student in the class (Raju ক্লাসের মধ্যে সবচেয়ে ভালো ছাত্র) ।
2a. He is the best of all the boys.
3. Santana is the best student of the class (সান্তানু ক্লাসের সবচেয়ে ভালো ছাত্র) ।
4. Rama is the most beautiful of all. রমা সকলের চেয়ে বেশি সুন্দরী।
5. Khabir was the wisest of all. কবির সর্বাপেক্ষা বিজ্ঞ ছিলেন ।
Parallelism:- দুটি Degree কে যদি and দিয়ে যুক্ত করা হয় । তাহলে and এর উভয় পাশে একই ডিগ্রী থাকবে।
Ex:- 1.. He is good and wise.
2. Kiya is beautiful and tall.
3. Aziz is braver and wiser than Raju.
4. This book is cheaper and more useful than that.
5. Mamta is more beautiful and richer than Sunita.
6. I have the best and cheapest computer.
7. She is the best and wisest girl in the class.
Note:- যদি দুটি superlative degree একই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু সম্পর্কে বর্ণনা দেয় তাহলে প্রথম superlative degree টির সামনে the বসবে এবং দ্বিতীয় superlative degree টির সামনে the বসবে না।
Note:- er than most other noun in Plural form/ er than many other noun in plural form এদের অর্থ একই ।
Note:- comparative degree তে other শব্দটি ব্যবহার করা হয় প্রথম সাবজেক্টটিকে পরের ব্যক্তি বা বস্তু থেকে আলাদা করার জন্য।
Note:- যদি দুটি ভিন্ন গ্রুপের মধ্যে তুলনা করা হয় তাহলে No এরপর Other বসানোর দরকার নেই। অর্থাৎ ছেলের সঙ্গে মেয়েকে যদি তুলনা করা হয় তাহলে এরকম কেস ঘটে।
যেমন:-i). Rita is wiser than any boy in her class./ Rita is wiser than all boys in her class.
Positive- No boy is as wise as Rita in her class.
Superlative:- Rita is the wisest of all boys in her class. রিতা তার ক্লাসের সমস্ত ছেলেদের থেকে বিজ্ঞ।
ii) Mohan is better than any player in your team.
Positive- No player is as good as Mohan in your team.
Superlative:-Mohan is the best of all players in your team.
এছাড়াও এই নিয়মগুলো লক্ষ করতে হবে:-
1. Positive degree তে As soon as থাকলে তাকে comparative degree তে পরিবর্তন করার সময় as soon as এর পরিবর্তে no sooner had বসবে এবং প্রথম verb এর V3 বসবে এবং comma উঠে গিয়ে than বসবে। একইভাবে comparative degree থেকে positive degree তে পরিবর্তন করার সময় No sooner had এর পরিবর্তে as soon as বসবে এবং V3 এর পরিবর্তে V2 বসবে এবং than উঠে গিয়ে comma হবে।
2. Positive- Subject+is/are/am+as/so+adjective in positive form+as+object.
Note:- as—–as সাধারণত positive & negative উভয় বাক্যের ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহার করা হয়।
So—– as শুধুমাত্র negative sentence এর ক্ষেত্রে ব্যবহার করা হয়।
Comparative- object+is/are/am+not+adjective in comparative form+than+subject.
Superlative degree-দুটি ব্যক্তি বা দুটি বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করা হয়ে থাকলে তাদের superlative degree হয় না।
3. Positive- Subject+is/are/am+not+as/so+adjective in positive form+as+object.
Comparative- object+is/are/am +adjective in comparative form+than+subject.
Superlative degree-দুটি ব্যক্তি বা দুটি বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করা হয়ে থাকলে তাদের superlative degree হয় না।
4. Comparative degree – Subject+is/are/am+not less/no less+adjective +than+object.
Positive degree – subject+is/are/am+as +adjective in positive form+as+object.
Superlative degree-দুটি ব্যক্তি বা দুটি বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করা হয়ে থাকলে তাদের superlative degree হয় না।
5. Comparative degree – Subject+is/are/am+not less+adjective in positive form+than+object.
Positive degree – subject+is/are/am+not+as +adjective in positive form+as+object.
No other (Subject in Singular form)=এমন কোন ব্যক্তি/ বস্তু নেই। যেমন :- No other country=এমন কোন দেশ নেই। No other student=এমন কোন ছাত্র নেই।
Very few (Subject in plural form)=খুব কমই আছে।
Than any other (noun in Singular form)/Than all other ( noun in Plural form)/Than many other ( noun in plural form) =যেকোনো…. এর চেয়ে /থেকে।
এই তিনটার মধ্যে comparative degree তে যেকোনো একটা ব্যবহার করা যাবে।
Than many other ( noun in plural form)=অন্য অনেক….. এর চেয়ে/থেকে।
Than most other (noun in plural form)=বেশির ভাগের চেয়ে।
Than all other (noun in plural form)= অন্য সকল ……এর চেয়ে।
1. Positive degree থেকে comparative degree এবং superlative degree e তে পরিবর্তন করার সময় positive degree এর শেষদিক অর্থাৎ object টা comparative degree এবং superlative degree এর subject হিসাবে প্রথমে বসাতে হবে। একইভাবে comparative degree এবং superlative degree থেকে positive degree তে পরিবর্তন করার সময় comparative degree and superlative degree এর object positive degree এর subject হবে।
2. Comparative degree থেকে superlative degree এবং superlative degree থেকে comparative degree তে পরিবর্তন করার সময় বাক্যের প্রথম থেকে শুরু করতে হবে।
উদাহরণ:-
Q:- Ratan is the tallest boy in his class/Ratan is the tallest of all boys in his class.
Positive- No other boy in his class is so(/as) tall as Ratan.
Comparative- Ratan is taller than any other boy in his class.
Comparative- Ratan is taller than all other boys in his class.
Note:- উপরের দুটি বাক্যের অর্থ একই।
Note:- লক্ষণীয় বিষয় হলো any other এরপর Singular noun বসবে। কিন্তু all other এরপর Plural noun বসবে।
1. No other boy is as brilliant as Aziz.
Comparative-Aziz is more brilliant than any other boy.******
Comparative-Aziz is more brilliant than all other boys.
Note:- উপরের দুটি বাক্যের অর্থ একই।
Superlative- Aziz is the most brilliant boy.
Superlative- Aziz is the most brilliant of all boys.
Note:- উপরের দুটি বাক্যের অর্থ একই।
Note:- লক্ষণীয় বিষয় হলো the most + adjective এর superlative form এরপর Singular noun বসবে । কিন্তু of all এরপর noun বসালে তার Plural form বসবে।
2. No other city is as polluted as Kolkata.
Comparative- Kolkata is more polluted than any other City.
Comparative- Kolkata is more polluted than all other Cities.
Superlative- Kolkata is the most polluted city.
Superlative- Kolkata is the most polluted of all Cities.
3. Very few poets are as great as Nazrul.
Comparative- Nazrul is greater than most other poets.
Comparative- Nazrul is greater than many other poets.
Superlative- Nazrul is one of the greatest poets.
4. Very few sea beaches are as long as Digha.
Comparative- Digha is longer than most other sea beaches.
Comparative- Digha is longer than many other sea beaches.
Superlative- Digha is one of the longest sea beaches.
5. He is the best boy in the class.
Comparative- He is better than any other boy in the class.
Comparative- He is better than all other boys in the class.
Positive- No other boy is as(/so) good as he.
6. Nazrul is the greatest poet in Bangladesh.
Comparative-Nazrul is greater than any other poet in Bangladesh.
Comparative-Nazrul is greater than all other poets in Bangladesh.
Positive- No other poet is as great as Nazrul.
7. Kolkata is the biggest city in West Bengal.
Positive-No other City in West Bengal is as big as Kolkata.
Comparative- Kolkata is bigger than any other city in West Bengal.
8. Digha is larger than any other sea beaches all over India.
Positive-. No other sea beaches is as large as Digha all over India.
Superlative-Digha is the largest sea beaches all over India.
9. Kolkata is bigger than any other city in West Bengal.
Positive-No other city is as big as Kolkata in West Bengal.
Superlative- Kolkata is the biggest city in West Bengal.
10. Delhi is bigger than most other cities in India.
Positive- Very few cities are as big as Delhi in India.
Superlative- Delhi is one of the biggest cities in India.
11. Air is the most important element in our environment.
Positive- No other element is as important as air in our environment.
Comparative- Air is more important than ony other element in our environment.
12. Raju is the best student in the class.
Positive-No other student in the class as good as Raju.
Superlative- Raju is better than any other student in the class.
13. Sachin is the smallest player in the team.
Positive- No other player in the is small as Sachin.
Comparative- Sachin is smaller than any other player in the team.
14. Kibria is greater than any other boy in the class.
Positive- No other boy in the class is as great as Kibria.
Superlative-Kibria is the greatest boy in the class.
15. He is one of the best players in the team.
Positive-Very few players are as good as he.
Comparative- He is better than most other players in the team.
16. The gold is more useful than most other metals.
Positive-Very few metals are as useful as the gold.
Superlative- The gold is one of the most useful metals.
17. Japan is the richest country in the world.
Positive- No other country in the world as rich as Japan.
Comparative- Japan is richer than any other country in the world.
18. Akbar was one of the greatest kings.
Positive:- very few kings were as great as Akbar.
Comparative- Akbar was greater than most other kings.
19. Asit Biswas is the best teacher in Ghatal subdivision.
Posotive- No other teacher is in Ghatal subdivision is as(/so) good as Asit Biswas.
Comparative- Asit Biswas is better than any other techer in Ghatal subdivision.
20. Health is more valuable than wealth.
Positive- Wealth is not so(/as) valuable as health.
Superlative – বাক্যে দুইজন ব্যক্তি বা দুটি বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করা হলে তার superlative degree তে পরিণত করা যায় না।
21. Saleha is the tallest girl in class X.
Positive- no other girl in the class X as tall as Saleha.
Comparative- saleha is taller than any other girl in class X.
22. Darjeeling is cooler than Siliguri.
Posotive- Siliguri is not as cool as Darjeeling.
Superlative-বাক্যে দুইজন ব্যক্তি বা দুটি বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করা হলে তার superlative degree তে পরিণত করা যায় না।
23. Comparative: He is no less intelligent than you.
Positive: He is as intelligent as you.
24. Comparative: Kripa is not less clever than shipa.
Positive: Kripa is as clever as shipa.
25. No other language is as important as English. এমন কোনো ভাষা নেই ইংরেজির মত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
Comparative- English is more important than any other language. ইংরেজি যেকোনো ভাষার থেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
Superlative- English is the most important language. ইংরেজি সব থেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভাষা।
26. Very few languages are as important as English. খুব কম ভাষাই আছে ইংরেজির মত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
Comparative- English is more important than most other languages.
Superlative- English is one of the most important languages. ইংলিশ সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভাষাগুলির মধ্যে একটি।
27. Cricket is one of the most popular games. ক্রিকেট সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় খেলাগুলির মধ্যে একটি।
Positive- very few games are as popular as cricket. খুব কম খেলা আছে ক্রিকেটের মতো জনপ্রিয়।
Comparative- cricket is more popular than most other games.
28. Time is one of the most valuable things .সময় সবচেয়ে মূল্যবান জিনিস গুলির মধ্যে একটি।
Positive- Very few things are as valuable as time. খুব কম জিনিসই আছে টাইম এর মত মূল্যবান।
Comparative- Time is more valuable than most other things.
29. Militancy is one of the most serious problems in India. জঙ্গিবাদ ভারতে সবচেয়ে মারাত্মক সমস্যা গুলোর মধ্যে একটি।
Positive- Very few problems are as serious as militancy in India. ভারতে খুব কমই সমস্যা আছে জঙ্গিবাদের মতো মারাত্মক।
Comparative- Militancy is more serious than most other problems in India.
30. No other country in the world is as beautiful as India. পৃথিবীতে এমন কোন দেশ নেই ভারতের মতো সুন্দর।
Comparative- India is more beautiful than any other country in the world. পৃথিবীতে যে কোন দেশ থেকে ভারত সুন্দর।
Superlative- India is the most beautiful country in the world. ভারত পৃথিবীতে সবথেকে সুন্দর দেশ।
31. No other student in our class is as meritorious as he আমাদের ক্লাসে এমন কোন ছাত্র নেই তার মত মেধাবী।
Comparative- He is more meritorious than any other student in our class.
Superlative- He is the most meritorious student in our class.
32. No other game in the world as popular as football. পৃথিবীতে এমন কোনো খেলা নেই ফুটবলের মত জনপ্রিয়।
Comparative- Football is more popular than any other game in the world.
Superlative- football is the most popular game in the world.
33. No other City in West Bengal as busy as Kolkata. পশ্চিমবঙ্গে এমন কোন শহর নেই কলকাতার মতো ব্যস্ত।
Comparative-Kolkata is busier than any other city in West Bengal.
Superlative- Kolkata is the busiest city in West Bengal.
34. Very few students in our class are as industries as Rohim. আমাদের ক্লাসে খুব কম শিক্ষার্থী আছে রহিমের মত পরিশ্রমই।
Comparative- Rohim is more industries than most other students in our class.
Superlative- Rohim is one of the most industrious students in our class.
35. He is better than many other people. সে অন্য অনেক লোকের চেয়ে ভালো।
36. This is more informative than many other books. এটা অন্য অনেক বইয়ের চেয়ে তথ্যবহুল ।
37. He is more intelligent than most other students in our class. সে আমাদের ক্লাসের বেশিরভাগ ছাত্র দের চেয়ে মেধাবী।
38. Smoking is more serious than all other habits. ধূমপান অন্য সকল অভ্যাস এর চেয়ে মারাত্মক।
39.Education is more important than all other things. শিক্ষা অন্য সকল জিনিসের চেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
40. He is worse than all other boys সে অন্য সব ছেলেদের থেকে খারাপ।
41. English is less important than Bangla. ইংরেজি বাংলার চেয়ে কম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
Positive- English is not so important as Bangla. ইংলিশ বাংলার মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নয়।
42. The boy is less meritorious than the girl. ছেলেটি মেয়েটির চেয়ে কম মেধাবী।
Positive- The boy is not as meritorious as the girl. ছেলেটি মেয়েটির মত মেধাবী নয়।
43. Reading newspaper is not less important than reading book. সংবাদপত্র পড়া বই পড়ার চেয়ে কম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ নয়।
Positive- Reading newspaper is as important as reading book. খবরের কাগজ পড়া বই পড়ার মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।
44. He is not less industrious than I. সে আমার চেয়ে কম পরিশ্রমে নয়।
Positive- He is as industrious as I. সে আমার মত পরিশ্রমী।
45. He is not less good than you. সে তোমার চেয়ে কম ভালো নয়।
Positive- He is as good as you. সে তোমার মতো ভালো।
46. English is the least important language. ইংরেজি সব থেকে কম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভাষা।
47. It is the least important question. এটা সবচেয়ে কম গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রশ্ন।
49. He was the least clever boy in our class সে আমাদের ক্লাসে সবচেয়ে কম চালাক ছেলে ছিল।
50. He is the least influential leader in our village. সে আমাদের গ্রামে সবচেয়ে কম প্রভাবশালী নেতা।
51. Football is more popular than many other games. ফুটবল অন্য অনেক খেলার চেয়ে জনপ্রিয়।

Superlative- Football is one of the most popular games. ফুটবল সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় খেলা গুলোর মধ্যে একটি।
54. Football is more popular than any other game ফুটবল যেকোনো খেলার চেয়ে জনপ্রিয়।
Positive- No other game is as popular as football. এমন কোনো খেলা নেই ফুটবলের মতো জনপ্রিয়।
Superlative- Football is the most popular game. ফুটবল সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় খেলা।
55. Football is the least popular game. ফুটবল সবচেয়ে কম জনপ্রিয় খেলা।
Positive- Football is not as popular as other games(/any other game).
Comparative – Football is leser than any other game.
56. As soon as he saw me, he ran away. যেইমাত্র সে আমাকে দেখলো, সে চলে গেল।
Comparative- No Sooner had he seen me than he ran away.
57. He is bigger than all other boys. সে অন্য সকল ছেলেদের চেয়ে বড়।
Positive- No other boys is as big as he. এমন কোন বালক নেই তার মত বড়।
Superlative – He is the biggest boy.
Superlative – He is the biggest of all boys.

Positive- No other men is as good as he.
Comparative-He is better than all other men.

Comparative- No sooner had the man seen the tiger than he ran away.

Comparative- No Sooner had I entered the room than the boys stood up.
61. The girl is as beautiful as you said.
Comparative- The girl is not less beautiful than you said.
Note:- বাক্যের মধ্যে যার সাথে তুলনা করতে হয় সে যদি না থাকে তাহলে not less বসিয়ে comparative degree করতে হয়।

Comparative- The boy is not less short than you think.

Positive- Taj Mahal is not as old as Some memorials in India.

67. Spring is the best time. বসন্তকাল সব থেকে ভালো সময়।
Positive- No other time is as good as spring.
Comparative-Spring is better than any other time.
68. I was the most important man.
Positive degree:- No other man was as important as I.
Comparative:- I was more important than any other man.
69. The most important thing in the world was science.
Positive degree:- No other thing in the world was as important as science.
Comparative:- Science was more important than any other thing.

Positive: very few metals are as/so useful as gold.
Comparative: Jotibosu was greater than most other politicians in india.

No less/not less ……..than যুক্ত Comparative Degree কে Positive Degree তে রুপান্তর করার নিয়মঃ
No less/not less এর পরিবর্তে উক্ত যায়গায় as বসে এবং than এর পরিবর্তে উক্ত যায়গায় as বসে। আর কোন পরিবর্তন হয় না।
Comparative: He is no less intelligent than you.

No sooner had এর পরিবর্তে as soon as + subject + verb এর পরিবর্তে past form + than এর পূর্বের অংশ + than এর পরিবর্তে কমা বসে + বাকী অংশ।
Comparative: No sooner had he seen me than he ran away.
Positive: As soon as he saw me, he ran away.
