Background/History
Bangladesh, a country located in South Asia, gained independence from Pakistan in 1971. Since then, the country has made significant progress in various sectors, including agriculture, industry, and infrastructure development. However, the country still faces several challenges, such as poverty, inequality, and political instability. In recent years, Bangladesh has embraced the concept of a Smart Nation or Smart City as a means to address these challenges and achieve sustainable development.
”Smart Bangladesh” concept was first introduced recently by the government of Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The vision aims to transform Bangladesh into a digitally advanced nation, where citizens can benefit from the use of technology in various sectors such as education, healthcare, and governance. The government has identified four major pillars to achieve this vision, namely SMART Citizens, SMART Government, SMART Economy, and SMART Society.
Over the years, the government of Bangladesh has implemented several initiatives to promote the Smart Bangladesh concept. For example, the government has focused on expanding digital infrastructure to rural areas, promoting digital literacy, and encouraging the growth of the technology industry. The government has also introduced several e-services, such as e-governance, e-commerce, and e-health, to improve the efficiency and transparency of public service delivery.
Moreover, the government has implemented several sustainable development initiatives to promote a Smart Society. These include the promotion of renewable energy, the expansion of internet access to remote areas, and the adoption of sustainable agriculture practices. The government has also taken steps to address social issues such as gender inequality and poverty.
