A Wise Judge
Once a golden necklace was lost from a rich man’s house. A few servants worked in that house. Naturally it was suspected that any one of the servants had stolen the necklace. Each of them was asked. But nobody confessed the guilt. So, the master of the house lodged a complaint before the Judge. All of the servants were summoned to the court. But all of the servants denied the charge. Then the Judge hit upon a plan. He gave each of them a stick of same length and told them to submit them to the court the following day. He told them that the person who had stolen the necklace, his stick would increase an inch. When they returned home, they kept their sticks as they were. But the servant who stole the necklace shortened it by an inch. The next day when everybody submitted the sticks, it was found that one stick was short by an inch. Then the thief was detected and he was given punishment.

একদা এক ধনী লোকের বাড়ি থেকে একটি সোনার নেকলেস হারিয়ে গেলো। ঐ বাড়িতে কয়েকজন চাকর কাজ করতো। স্বাভাবিকভাবেই সন্দেহ করা হলো যে চাকরদের মধ্যে একজন নেকলেসটি চুরি করেছে। তাদের প্রত্যেককে জিজ্ঞাসা করা হলো। কিন্তু কেউ অপরাধ স্বীকার করলো না। তাই, বাড়ির মনিব বিচারকের কাছে নালিশ জানালো। চাকরদের সবাইকে আদালতে হাজির হওয়ার জন্য বলা হলো। কিন্তু চাকরদের সবাই অভিযোগ অস্বীকার করলো। তখন বিচারক একটি পরিকল্পনা করলেন। তিনি তাদের প্রত্যেককে সমান দৈর্ঘ্যরে একটি লাঠি দিলেন এবং পরদিন তাদেরকে সেটা আদালতে জমা দিতে বললেন। তিনি তাদেরকে বললেন যে, যে নেকলেসটি চুরি করেছে, তার লাঠিটি এক ইঞ্চি বেড়ে যাবে। যখন তারা বাড়ি ফিরলো, তারা তাদের লাঠিগুলো যেমন ছিল সেভাবেই রেখে দিলো। কিন্তু যে চাকরটি নেকলেস চুরি করেছিলো সে লাঠিটি এক ইঞ্চি ছোট করে রাখলো। পরদিন যখন প্রত্যেকে লাঠিগুলো জমা দিলো, একটি লাঠি এক ইঞ্চি ছোট পাওয়া গেলো। তখন চোরকে শনাক্ত করা হলো এবং তাকে শাস্তি দেওয়া হলো।
All That Glitters Is Not Gold
Once there was a stag in a forest. He felt very thirsty and went to a stream to drink water. The water of the pool was so clear that he could see his image in the water. He was very charmed to see the image of his horn. But when he saw his legs, he was very sorry because his legs were very thin and ugly. While thinking so, he saw a hunter coming towards him with his hounds. The stag was so afraid that he started running fast to save his life. His legs helped him to run fast. But his horns got entangled with the creepers in the bushes. He fell down. The hunter came and killed him. Had he not the horns, he might not have been killed.
চকচক করলেই সোনা হয় না
একদা এক জঙ্গলে একটি হরিণ ছিল। সে খুব তৃষ্ণার্ত হলো এবং পানি পানের জন্য এক নদীতে গেলো। নদীর পানি এত পরিষ্কার ছিল যে সে পানিতে তার প্রতিবিম্ব দেখতে পেলো। সে তার শিং-এর প্রতিবিম্ব/ছায়া দেখে খুব মুগ্ধ হলো। কিন্তু যখন সে তার পা-গুলো দেখলো, সে খুব দুঃখিত হলো কারণ তার পা-গুলো ছিল খুব সরু এবং কুৎসিত। যখন সে এরকম ভাবছিলো তখন সে এক শিকারীকে তার কুকুরগুলো সাথে নিয়ে তার দিকে আসতে দেখলো। হরিণটি এত ভীত ছিলো যে সে তার জীবন বাঁচাতে দ্রুত দৌড়াতে লাগলো। তার পা-গুলো তাকে দ্রুত দৌড়াতে সাহায্য করলো। কিন্তু শিংগুলো ঝোপের লতা-পাতার সাথে আটকে গেলো। সে নিচে পড়ে গেলো। শিকারী এলো এবং তাকে মেরে ফেললো। যদি তার শিংগুলো না থাকতো, সে হয়তো মারা পড়তো না।
The Judgement Of King Solomon
Once there lived two women in a village. One of them had a baby. But another woman claimed that baby. As a result, both of them entangled in a quarrel. None could find a solution to the problem. Last of all they went to the court of King Solomon. King Solomon was a very wise and just king. Finding out the truth he could solve any problem. When he saw that none left the claim of the baby, he thought what to do. Then he ordered one of his men to cut the baby into two equal halves and give one half to each of the women. The first woman became very elated. She said, “I’m agreed with the decision. Please give me my half.” But the second woman started howling. She told the king, “Don’t kill the baby. I don’t need my share. Give the baby to her.” The king understood the fact and gave the baby to the second woman and the first woman was sent to prison.
রাজা সলোমনের বিচার
একদা এক গ্রামে দুই মহিলা বাস করতো। তাদের একজনের একটি শিশু ছিল। কিন্তু অন্য মহিলাটি ঐ শিশুকে নিজের বলে দাবি করলো। ফলে, তাদের উভয়ে ঝগড়া শুরু করলো। কেউ এ সমস্যার সমাধান খুঁজে পেলো না। সবশেষে তারা রাজা সলোমনের আদালতে গেলো। রাজা সলোমন ছিলেন খুব জ্ঞানী ও ন্যায়পরায়ণ রাজা। সত্য উদ্ঘাটন করে তিনি যে কোন সমস্যার সমাধান করতে পারতেন। যখন তিনি দেখলেন যে কেউই শিশুটির দাবি ত্যাগ করছে না, তিনি ঠিক করলেন কী করতে হবে। তখন তিনি তাঁর কর্মচারিদের একজনকে শিশুটিকে সমান দুভাগে কেটে মহিলাদের প্রত্যেককে অর্ধেক করে দিয়ে দেওয়ার জন্য বললেন। প্রথম মহিলাটি খুব উৎফুল্ল হলো। সে বললো, “আমি এ সিদ্ধান্তে রাজি। অনুগ্রহ করে আমার অর্ধেক আমাকে দিন।” কিন্তু দ্বিতীয় মহিলা উচ্চস্বরে কাঁদতে শুরু করলো। সে রাজাকে বললো, “শিশুটিকে মারবেন না। আমি আমার অংশ চাই না। শিশুটি তাকে দিয়ে দিন।” রাজা আসল ঘটনা বুঝতে পারলেন এবং শিশুটি দ্বিতীয় মহিলাকে দিয়ে দিলেন এবং প্রথম মহিলাকে কারাগারে পাঠানো হলো।
The Fox And The Crow
Once a fox saw a crow sitting on the top of a tree. She had a piece of meat in her beak. “I wish I could somehow make the crow drop it. What a hearty meal of it I would make!” thought the hungry fox within himself. “Good morning, Madam Crow”, said he. “I am told that you have a very sweet voice. Will you just sing to me one of your sweetest songs?” Now this crow happened to be a silly bird. She felt flattered at the false praise of her voice, and readily agreed. As she opened her beak to sing, the piece of meat fell to the ground below. The fox took it up and ran away with it. The poor crow had nothing to do but repent. So, indeed she felt very sorry. She said to herself, “What a fool I made of myself! I will never trust a flatterer any more.”

একদা এক খেঁকশিয়াল একটি কাককে গাছের ডালে বসে থাকতে দেখল। তার ঠোঁটে এক টুকরা মাংস ছিল। “আমি যেভাবেই হোক কাকের কাছ থেকে যদি এটা ফেলতে পারতাম,” ক্ষুধার্ত শিয়াল মনে মনে ভাবল “এটি কি সুন্দর একটি মনোমুগ্ধকর খাবার হতো!” “শুভ সকাল, ম্যাডাম কাক,” সে বলল, “আমাকে বলা হয়েছে যে তোমার একটা খুব সুন্দর কণ্ঠ আছে। তুমি কি তোমার সুমিষ্ট গানের মধ্য থেকে আমাকে একটা গান গেয়ে শোনাতে পার?” আসলে এই কাকটি ছিল একটি বোকা কাক। সে তার কণ্ঠের মিথ্যা প্রশংসা শুনে খুশি হলো এবং তৎক্ষণাৎ রাজি হলো। যেইমাত্র সে গান গাওয়ার জন্য তার ঠোঁট খুলল, তার মাংসের টুকরাটি নিচে মাটিতে পড়ে গেল। শেয়াল এটা তুলে নিল এবং দৌঁড়ে পালিয়ে গেল। অসহায় কাকের অনুতাপ করা ছাড়া আর কিছুই করার ছিল না। তাই, সত্যিই সে খুব দুঃখবোধ করল। সে নিজে নিজে বলল, “আমি কি বোকামিই না করেছি! আমি আর কখনোই কোনো তোষামোদকারীকে বিশ্বাস করব না।”

The Ant And The Dove
Once upon a time, an ant lived on the bank of a river. One day it suddenly slipped into water. It was trying very hard to come ashore. A dove lived in a tree on the bank not far from the spot. The dove saw the ant struggling in a helpless condition. She was touched with pity. So in order to save it from being drowned she at once dropped a leaf into the water. The ant got on the leaf and saved itself. A few days after this, a hunter came there with a gun. The ant saw and followed him. He aimed his gun to shoot the dove in the tree. As soon as the ant saw this, it bit his foot. The pain caused by the ant made the hunter crying at a loud voice. The dove heard the sound and fly off at once. Thus the ant saved the dove that had once saved its life.
পিঁপড়া এবং ঘুঘু
একদা একটি পিঁপড়া নদীর ধারে বাস করত। একদিন এটা হঠাৎ পানিতে পড়ে গেল। তীরে ওঠার জন্য এটি আপ্রাণ চেষ্টা করছিল। একটি ঘুঘু এই জায়গার কাছাকাছি নদীর ধারে একটি গাছে বাস করতো। ঘুঘুটি দেখল পিঁপড়াটি নিঃস্ব অবস্থায় বাঁচার প্রাণপণ চেষ্টা করছে। তার খুব করুণা হলো। তাই সে এটাকে ডুবে যাওয়া থেকে বাঁচাবার জন্য পানিতে একটা পাতা ফেললো। পিঁপড়া পাতায় উঠল এবং নিজের জীবন রক্ষা করল। এর কিছুদিন পর, এক শিকারি সেখানে একটা বন্দুক নিয়ে এলো। পিঁপড়া তাকে দেখলো এবং অনুসরণ করল। সে গাছে ঘুঘুটিকে গুলি করার জন্য তার বন্দুক তাক করল। যখনই পিঁপড়া এটা দেখল তখনই এটা শিকারির পায়ে কামড় দিল। পিঁপড়ার কামড়ের ব্যথার ফলে শিকারী যন্ত্রণায় জোরে চিৎকার করে উঠলো। ঘুঘুটি এটা শুনতে পেল এবং তৎক্ষণাৎ উড়ে যেতে পারলো। এভাবে পিঁপড়া ঘুঘুকে রক্ষা করল যে একদিন এটির জীবন রক্ষা করেছিল।
