আলকেমি শব্দটি এসেছে আরবি শব্দ আল-কিমিয়া থেকে। আল-কিমিয়া শব্দটি আবার এসেছে কিমি (Chemi বা Kimi) শব্দ থেকে। এই Chemi শব্দ থেকেই Chemistry শব্দের উৎপত্তি, যার বাংলা প্রতিশব্দ হলো রসায়ন।
