Child Labour: Elimination is The Demand

It is evident that child labour seems to be one of the major socio-economic tribulations in many countries. Studies expose that one in every six children of Bangladesh falls victim to the curse named child labour. Both in urban and rural areas, most of the working children are found working in informal sectors of the economy. In urban and metropolitan areas, poor families cannot maintain an adequate standard of living for their children. Poverty seduces them to perceive new ways of living. Parents say that they are also bound to send their children to work instead of sending to school due to poverty. In urban areas, the biggest numbers of children are found in household services, restaurants, selling and vending activities, various scavenging and re-cycling activities in the informal, small-scale manufacturing and repair shops. The working environment for the children in those sectors is not friendly at all. As a result, they suffer from various diseases like asthma, dysentery, peptic ulcer, malnutrition etc. Sometimes, socio-economic crises form untold sufferings in the life of children. Government should ensure social safety to these children so that they can be accustomed to a better childhood. The rigid penal provisions of the child labour preventing acts existing in this country can be constructive to banish child labour from our country.
